The ugli fruit, also called uniq fruit, is the Jamaican version of a tangelo, which is formed by combining grapefruit with a mandarin orange or a tangerine. A 1/2-cup serving of ugli fruit provides 109 percent of the daily value for vitamin C and 12 percent of the daily value for fiber. You can use ugli fruit in many of the same ways you would use an orange or a grapefruit, as they tend to be very juicy and taste mainly sweet with just a touch of bitterness.
Smoothies and Breakfast Foods
Make an ugli fruit smoothie for breakfast or a snack. Blend pieces of peeled ugli fruit with bananas, milk and pineapple or orange juice or try strawberries, bananas and ugli fruit blended together with a few ice cubes for a non-dairy option. Add a handful of spinach to turn it into a nutrient-rich green smoothie. You could also top yogurt with granola or muesli and peeled and sliced ugli fruit.
The ugli fruit also makes a nutritious addition to either green or fruit salads. Combine ugli fruit sections with avocado, strawberries, spinach and vinaigrette for a delicious green salad or top a combination of green leafy vegetables with oranges, ugli fruit, mint, raisins, almonds, macadamia nuts and a citrus dressing. Another option is a mixed citrus salad with grapefruit, ugli fruit, oranges, lemon juice and pomegranate seeds. Berries also go well with ugli fruit in salads, as do kiwi fruit and bananas.
Salsas and Relishes
Form a simple salsa by mixing ugli fruit with diced tomato, minced garlic and basil. For a spicier salsa to serve alongside chicken or pork, mix ugli fruit with kiwi fruit, jalapeno pepper, cilantro, lime juice and red onion. Make a relish with olives, parsley and ugli fruit and serve with crostini.
Ugli fruit can add some zip to your main dish if you use either the fruit itself or its juice to make a tangy sauce. Make an ugli fruit sauce for scallops by combining ugli fruit juice with white wine, shallots, mint and honey. Create a casserole with mushrooms, chicken broth, pork and ugli fruit or cook ugli fruit in Cointreau to make a sauce for duck.
As a Dessert
You can make the mixture of a granita by combining ugli fruit juice, lemon juice, water and a little sugar. Create a pudding mixture made with the zest and juice of ugli fruit mixed with a small amount of honey, butter and cornstarch. An even healthier ugli fruit dessert is a fruit parfait made with layers of plain Greek yogurt, ugli fruit and almonds. Drizzle this dessert perhaps with a little honey for sweeter flavor.
